Run the Reagan 2014!
By Beth Volpert

The 2014 Run the Reagan plans are in full swing for the day-long family celebration and race. According to their website, www.RuntheReagan.org, the race planners have the support of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, Gwinnett County Department of Transportation and the City of Snellville to close the Ronald Reagan Parkway.

Are you registered yet to Run the Reagan 2014?The road will be closed beginning Friday at midnight, February 14th and open after all races and clean-up are finished on Saturday, February 15th.

The closing of Ronald Reagan Parkway for the race will allow runners to have their choice of race events (Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, and one mile Fun run) for a safe, fun and challenging run.  There will also be a sponsor display area open pre and post the races for information and freebies. Food and beverages will be available and the event will be held rain or shine.

Dr. Norman Freid knocking on doors for sponsorshipsRun the Reagan is benefit for Gwinnett Community Clinic, a non-profit clinic that treats the working poor of Gwinnett. The clinic focuses on treating those who are ill by providing specialty treatment and referrals to local physicians, nurses and other medical professionals who generously volunteer their time and efforts for the clinic. Retired physician, Dr. Norman Freid, has been literally knocking on doors spearheading fundraising efforts for the expansion of the clinic’s resources. “We operate on an extremely tight budget,” says Dr. Freid. “Each of our volunteers offers extensive services and give of their time. This is a labor of love.”

Participation in the run is truly for everyone. All ages, single runners, families and groups are all encouraged to find a race that suits them. One group, YES YOU CAN, has more than 200 people who train together for a variety of races. Based in Gwinnett County and run by Steve Wallace and Nadia Ruiz, YYC offers training and a “safety in numbers” mentality. “We like to run in our own Gwinnett County parks,” says Ruiz. “Our county provides some beautiful places to run and this is where we train.” Ruiz adds that there are a number of motivators for running races. “Some run for the shirt, some for the ‘bling’ (medals), but we also love to run for the cause.” This year’s cause, The Gwinnett Community Clinic will benefit from the local runners who chose Run the Reagan for the cause.

The cause directly benefits those residents of Gwinnett County who are in need of medical services. According to the website, more than 150 health care professionals, including nurses, physicians, pharmacists, social workers, lab technicians and a host of other volunteers currently give their time to serve the poor who needed medical care. To fund and run the clinic, various fundraisers are held each year, but Run The Reagan is one event that everyone can participate in. It doesn’t require any special skills, just the willingness to sign up for the cause and you DO get the t-shirt! “Imagine what this county can do if everyone came out to Run the Reagan,” says Dr. Freid. “We really can change local lives.”
