A Look Back – 40 Years of Carlin Vision

When Dr. Richard Carlin opened his door for patients for the first time in 1977, the entire practice was two people: Richard and the receptionist, Linda. Forty years later, the Carlin Vision practice employs about 60 people, including seven doctors, and there is a surgery center as well as an impressive free-standing office building.

Tall Tale: Cataract surgery hurts

Tall Tale: Cataract surgery hurts
Truth: You should not experience pain during cataract surgery. A few hours after surgery, you may notice mild scratchiness or soreness that is relieved by taking an over the counter medicine such as Tylenol or Advil.

Do you suffer from baggy or puffy eyelids?

Baggy eyelids do more than keep you from looking your best. Your droopy eyelids can block your vision and keep you from seeing everything you should! As we age, the eyelid skin, just like other skin in the body, loses its elasticity and stretches.

Blepharoplasty vs. Ptosis

I get a lot of questions from patients about insurance paying for their eyelid surgery. Insurance will actually pay if it’s medically necessary – that is – if it’s interfering with your vision, which is easily determined with a free in-office consultation.

Demystifying Eye Health Evolution of Cataract Surgery II

Dr. Harold Ridley was an eye surgeon in London during World War II, who helped treat bomber and fighter pilots during the air war over Europe. The pilots suffered eye wounds as shards of plexiglass would lodge into the eye after bullets shattered canopies of the aircraft. He made an observation that the material did not react in the eye and was not rejected by the body.

Demystifying Eye Health Evolution of Cataract Surgery I

The oldest recorded incidence of cataracts was documented in a statue unearthed in Egypt from the 5th dynasty (about 2460 B.C.). A statue of a priest exhibited an obvious white pupil in one eye representing a mature cataract.

Life after cataract surgery

Cataracts have existed for centuries. With state-of-the-art surgical techniques, cataract surgery has become one of the safest and more effective outpatient procedures. According to the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, 3 million Americans undergo cataract surgery each year, with an overall success rate of 98% or higher.
