SOME IMPORTANT MAY EVENTS

•US Presidents Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy were born in May. Truman was born on May 8, 1884 and Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917.

TOUR OF LAWRENCEVILLE Members of the Lawrenceville First Baptist Church Phoebe Class toured Historic Lawrenceville during April. The Trolley Guy drove the group around to historic sites in the town which will be 200 years old in 2021. The tour was scheduled by Jo Corn and Mary Long narrated the tour.
•Halley’s Comet passed on May 18, 1910.

•The May 5, 1910 issue of The News-Herald reported: “Professor W.P. Martin was reelected as Superintendent of the Lawrenceville School and his salary was raised to $125 a month.”

•The Gwinnett Daily News, May 8, 1965 “David Bennett and Billy Wofford along with other members of the Berkmar High Beta Club enjoyed last Saturday at Six Flags over Georgia.”

CURRENT EVENTS

•Susan Arnold is the Gwinnett Technical College’s Instructor of the Year and the school winner of the Rick Perkins Award.

•The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved a contract to build a new senior center on Bethany Church Road next to the Centerville Community Center and the Centerville Library.

KidStuff Anniversary
KidStuff is a non-profit charity focusing on helping children around the world. A certificate of incorporation was issued to KIDSTUFF-USA, INC by the State of Georgia on May 12, 2006 and the organization was certified as a 501©3 non-profit charity through the United States Internal Revenue Service on December 21, 2006. KidStuff is approaching the tenth anniversary. This non-profit has touched many lives not only in Gwinnett but around the world. Reverend Lamar Holley and his wife Jean head the charity and sponsor events for children with autism and other needs without any charge to the participating families. This tenth year will be one of celebration and renewal for the charity that touches many lives.

REMEMBERING GRACE PUCKETT
Grace Burel Puckett was a Gwinnett native and an educator in Dacula Schools for 30 years. Grace passed away on July 16, 2015. Grace was valedictorian and president of the 1944 class of Dacula High School where she later taught for five years after she graduated from Georgia State College for Women. Grace and her husband Ernest F. Puckett were parents of two sons Timothy and Kent. Grace did not teach when her sons were very young but later returned to teach in the elementary school and she retired in 1984. Grace was active in numerous community and church activities. She was pianist at Duncan Creek Congregational Church for over seventy years. Grace was recently honored by the Beta Rho Chapter of the Delta Gamma Society when the Society met at Dacula Elementary School to donate books to the library in memory of Grace’s accomplishments as an educator and an outstanding Gwinnett Citizen.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
At the April 15, 2016 meeting The Gwinnett County Retired Educators Association presented scholarships to Gwinnett County school students and teachers. Students Kathryn Malcolm and Kayla Aquirre were awarded scholarships. The scholarships to the students were presented by Clarissa Rice, Chairman of the student scholarship committee. 

Beth Thompson chairman of the Gwinnett County Retired Educators Association Teacher Scholarship presented the annual teacher scholarships to Michelle Bruzan, Hyuan Soon McGee and Renee Wicker. 

RETIRING “HANDS ARE NOT FOR HITTING” DIRECTOR HONORED
Phyllis Caffey was honored for her ten years as Director of the puppet show presented to Gwinnett County School students at a luncheon held at Dominico Restaurant in Lawrenceville on April 8, 2016. “Hands Are Not For Hitting” is a teaching tool presented to students illustrating positive behavior. The show is sponsored by the Gwinnett County Solicitor and presented by members of the Gwinnett County Retired Educators Association.
