GWINNETT HISTORICAL SOCIETY POW PROGRAM
Robert Norton’s POW experience during WWII will be featured at the November 16, 2015 program of the Gwinnett Historical Society. The meeting begins at 7 p m and will be held on the second floor of the Historical Courthouse in Lawrenceville. All interested persons are invited to attend.
ROADWORK IN SNELLVILLE
Fourteen streets in Snellville are being paved by E.R. Snell, the lowest of five bidders for the job. Those streets being repaved: Brookhaven Terrace, Meadowchase Court, Meadowsweet Trail, Stonedale Place, Brookwood Lake Drive, Holly Springs Drive, Bridgecreek Court, Eastland Court, Eastland Way, Jayson Way, Marshall Trail, Wendover Drive, Skyland Glen Drive and Skyland Glen Court.

RETIRED EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION AUCTION NOVEMBER 20, 2015
This annual auction will be held in the Payne-Corley House in Duluth. The meeting begins at 11 with the auction to follow. Proceeds from the sales benefit scholarships for Gwinnett teachers and students.
PRUITT FAMILY REUNION IN BUFORD
Good food and a good time was the theme of the Pruitt Family Reunion held in the Phillip Beard Room at the Buford Senior Center on October 11, 2015. Invitations were sent out by Perry Pealock and almost one hundred cousins, siblings, family friends, aunts and uncles gathered in the big meeting room and all brought good food for the occasion. The famous banana pudding was the star of the dessert table. The banana pudding tradition was started by Mildred Pruitt Beard who always made a huge banana pudding for all family reunions that she attended. Sylvia Beard and Mildred’s daughter, Becky, continue making the delicious treat for family gatherings. There was a delicious chocolate pudding along with lots of fried chicken, biscuits, casseroles, grilled chicken and lots of vegetable dishes.
GWINNETT COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR FINALISTS
The six finalists for Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year: Trisha Connor, Harbins Elementary, Janelle Draper, White Oak Elementary, Emily Heend, Phoenix High, Alix McHardy, Norcross High, Jennifer Sevier, Dacula Middle, Felisha Strong, Richards Middle. The winner will be announced at a banquet on November 10, 2015.
GWINNETT RETIRED EDUCATORS TOUR OF THE GEORGIA EDUCATORS MUSEUM
A group of Gwinnett Retired Educators toured the recently opened Georgia Educators Museum on Falcon Parkway in Flowery Branch, Georgia. The tour on October 16, 2015 was led by Mary Long and Deloris Mullens. The Gwinnett Association purchased a chalkboard and an antique desk for the museum replica of an old schoolroom.
GEORGIA GWINNETT’S NEW PROVOST
T.J. Arant has been appointed provost at Georgia Gwinnett College replacing Lois Richardson. Arant has experience as a college president and chief academic officer, he will begin work at GGC no later than July 1, 2015.
JORDAN MIDDLE SCHOOL DEDICATION CEREMONY
The impressive dedication ceremony of the newly constructed Jordan Middle School was held at the school located in Lawrenceville at 8 Village Way off Highway 29 East on October 18, 2015. Faculty members and students greeted guests as they entered the building. The Jordan Middle School Orchestra Ensemble directed by Katrina Roman played for the event and the large crowd was welcomed by Principal Dr. Melissa Walker. The Jordan Middle School Chorus sang the national anthem after great grandchildren of H. Rhodes Jordan, Sr. for whom the school was named led the audience members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Assistant Principal Carol Williams introduced special guests and Dr. R. Page Fulgham gave a prayer of dedication. Students Brooklyn Knight, Kelvin Lakpor and Yndia Bell recited the Jordan Creed and Daniel Seckinger, District II Gwinnett Board of Education member greeted those in attendance. Jordan Middle School Teacher of the Year spoke on “Leading a Community of Excellence” and Assistant Principal Kristopher Kasler introduced members of the Jordan Family. H. Rhodes Jordan’s son Hill Jordan spoke of his father’s military service, his 8 terms as Mayor of Lawrenceville and his many years working as an attorney in the town where he spent his life. Gwinnett County Public Schools CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks gave the Dedication Address and Assistant Principal Michelle Parker made closing remarks. Dr. Walker directed the group to the areas where refreshments were served and to the display area on the main floor of the building.
CONGRATULATIONS ON RETIREMENT
Dacula High School Band Director Doug Harkness will retire after 24 years at Dacula High. The Falcon Marching Band has provided great entertainment at football games, the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Christmas Parade, the Dacula Memorial Day Parade and they have entertained in New York City and Disney World. The band has played on national television and on Atlanta stations.
