SEPTEMBER EVENTS
•President McKinley was shot by an assassin on September 6, 1901.
•President James A. Garfield died of assassin’s shot on September 19, 1881.
•Pilgrims sailed from England on the Mayflower on September 15, 1620.
•The first Continental Congress met in Philadelphia on September 5, 1774.
•September 11, 1872 an act of the Legislature created a Board of Commissioners for Gwinnett County.
•On September 6, 1886 an earthquake shook Lawrenceville.
•The Gwinnett Journal reported in the September 3, 1902 issue that “When a child is born the attending physician gets $10.”
•In September 1917 there were 340 students registered for school in Lawrenceville.
LOOKING BACK
•In 1906 there were 340 pupils in Lawrenceville School and Lawrenceville had an independent school system. In August 2015 Central Gwinnett High School had 2,188 students enrolled.
•Lawrenceville Elementary School opened in 1963. Central Gwinnett High school opened in the fall of 1957.
•An ad in Gwinnett Journal September 19, 1906: “Teacher wanted, $45 per month.”
•Gwinnett Journal, November 18, 1916: “T.C. Holcomb and Miss Jewel Haney were united in marriage on November 12.”
CURRENT EVENTS
Four new schools opened this new school year, they are Discovery High, Rhodes Jordan Middle School, Baggett and Graves Elementary. As of August 18th there were 173,960 students enrolled in Gwinnett schools. There were 2,188 students enrolled at Central Gwinnett.
There are now 79 elementary schools, 28 middle schools and 21 high schools in the Gwinnett County Public School System.
Kennesaw State University now has a football team, the Kennesaw Owls and the first game will be on September 3 against East Tennessee State. The KSU coach is Brian Bohannon with assistance from Vince Dooley.
Gwinnett Retired Educators who attended the area 14 information session held in Winder on August 20 were Laura Raiman, Judy Shaklee, Sara Lee, Carolyn Fetner, Nita Killebrew, Dianne Lockwood. The area 14 Director is Larry Johnson and the State Executive Director is Dr. William Sloan.
