Time well spent in summer

Summertime, for most high school students, means lounging by the pool with friends, trips to the beach or lake, and waking up late.

NG3 Staff

For almost 50 students from five different high schools, this summer offered a completely different opportunity.  Instead of soaking up rays on a float in the neighborhood pool, these young men and women spent two afternoons in investment seminars.  No numbers were discussed, no mention of stocks and bonds nor diversification of portfolios. These discussions centered on a subject of much greater value…how to be better leaders and invest in the lives of those around you.

The main goal of NG3 is to invest in the lives of high school student athletes, focusing on their character development and emphasizing the importance of serving others. The two leadership seminars, conducted by NG3, had a sole purpose of equipping our high school students with the tools to better serve their peers. So much esteem is given to being a “natural-born leader”, but there are so many more who simply need to be empowered and equipped to handle the myriad of challenges of being a leader. By the end of the first session, it was evident that walls of inhibition preventing many of the students in attendance from taking a more proactive approach to being a leader, were being torn down brick by brick. What once was seen as an impossibility, quickly became an attainable and fulfillable role given the right tools. As the second seminar began, the mood in the room was noticeably distinct from the beginning of the inaugural class. Gone were the searching faces. Gone was the unanswered question of “why me?” in the back of their minds. In it’s place was a hunger for more. A recurrent smile of anticipation saying “what else can you equip me with?” The discussions were lively, interactive, and already utilizing the information from the previous session.

No matter what time of year, be it middle of the semester or middle of the summer, our high school students are hungry. They are hungry to be nourished with information and tools that empower them. The mission of NG3 is to make sure that what is being fed into our youth can lead them in the direction of healthy lifestyles and choices. We can all recognize there exists a wide array of negative sources spewing toxic thoughts and deception into the minds of our students. NG3 is here to ensure that there is a consistent source of encouragement and guidance into their lives as well.

As the new school year approaches, NG3 is looking for volunteers in the community. The time commitment is minimal and the requirement is simple: a willingness to invest in the lives of our high school student athletes.
