With LCI project complete, ceremony set for Sept. 19

SNELLVILLE – A ceremony celebrating the completion of the Livable Centers Initiative will take place Sept. 19.

The event, set for 10 a.m., will include short remarks from local officials and the official ribbon cutting. The ceremony will take place in the parking lot at Wisteria Drive and Clower Street.

Residents are encouraged to attend.

Work began on the $3 million project in the summer of 2014 and is designed to be the focal point of the Towne Center, a walking-friendly business district which represents the future economic hub of the city.

The project area covers three major streets in the Central Business District – Oak Road, Clower Street and Wisteria Drive. Improvements include: more than 5,000 feet of new sidewalks (10-feet wide for pedestrian safety and convenience), a 5-foot planting strip for new street trees and flowers/shrubbery, brick paver crosswalks to slow traffic and encourage walking, beautiful new lighting fixtures carrying on the same theme as those around the Towne Green and the placement of benches, bike racks and other pedestrian amenities to encourage people to enjoy the area.

“To most people passing by, these improvements look like just new concrete bricks and benches but in reality they are looking at the future of Snellville,” said City Manager Butch Sanders.
