Gwinnett Quilters Guild “Just For You”

On May 17, the Gwinnett Quilters Guild held their annual quilt celebration to culminate their year-long community service project, "Just For You."

Rev. Kathy McFarland, Associate pastor at Cannon Methodist Church, prayed for the young patients who would receive the quilts which were lovingly made by the 178 member Guild.

Guild member, Mrs. Debbie Frey, explained how the project originated with her when her son was a patient in Scottish Rite Hospital.  In 2002 she began the “Just For You”  quilt donation program whose goal is to provide comfort and encouragement to hospitalized children and their families.  Since 2002 the Guild has made and donated 3,980 quilts.

Guest speaker was Ms. Lisa Kinsel, Manager of Volunteer Services at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, who brought her dog Casper, the original therapy dog in the CHOA Canines for Kids Program.  The Program now has 11 full time certified service dogs which work among the three CHOA hospitals.  Lisa spoke of the healing effects the quilts have on patients and their families, and Casper spread his own form of joy among the Guild’s members.
