Georgia Milestones Assessments

Did you know that Georgia Milestones are a comprehensive assessment program for students in 3rd through 12th grade which are administered in the public schools?

Carol Wood, Total Learning Concepts

Georgia Milestones measure what students have learned from Georgia’s Department of Education standards in English Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.

The content areas and grade levels tested are: 3rd through 8th-grade students take an end-of-grade (EOG) assessment in English Language Arts and mathematics, and 5th through 8th-grade students are also assessed in science and social studies.

High school students take an end-of-course (EOC) assessment for each of ten courses designated by the State Board of Education; which are, 9th Grade Literature and Composition, American Literature and Composition, Algebra I or Coordinate Algebra, Geometry or Analytic Geometry, Biology, Physical Science, U. S. History, and Economics/Business/Free Enterprise.

The end-of-course measures are administered at the completion of the course, regardless of the grade level. These assessments serve as the final exam for the course and constitute 20% to the student’s final course grade.

Middle school students who are enrolled in one or more of the high school courses noted on the list above are required to take the associated end-of-course assessment (EOC) and are not required to take the corresponding content area end-of-grade (EOG) test.

The purpose of Georgia Milestones is to provide information about how well students are mastering the state standards in the areas mentioned above. It is important to note that Georgia Milestones are designed to provide students, their parents, and teachers with important information about their achievement and preparedness for the next level of learning.

If you have concerns that your student is not yet ready to take these springtime standardized assessments, there is time to prepare them. Schools and/or professional tutors often offer Georgia Milestones preparation sessions to strengthen a student’s academic foundation and familiarize them with the various types of questions on the tests.
