The Community Services individual and group recipients’ combined efforts provided more than 850,000 hours towards initiatives such as youth and adult athletics, senior clubs, master gardener programs, advisory boards, senior learning, meal packaging and more.
The President’s Volunteer Service Award is an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service and is administered by Points of Light. Through a shared mission of inspiring more people to answer the call to service, the President’s Volunteer Service Award celebrates the impact volunteers can make in bettering their communities and the world.
“This is an opportunity for us to celebrate the impact of volunteer service, even though you may not seek recognition, your example can deliver a powerful message that encourages others to take action,” said Department Director Tina Fleming, “We shine a light on the people that inspire us to serve, recognizing and thanking volunteers who lend their time, talent and voice to make a difference in their communities.”

A special honor, the Shining Star Award, was given to Ms. Lois Allen, a long-serving member of the Gwinnett Parks Foundation and Recreation Authority Board for her lifetime of outstanding service to the improvement of the quality of life and communities within Gwinnett County. With her family in attendance, Ms. Allen’s dedicated accomplishments through volunteerism were celebrated with cheers and hugs from staff, peers and community leaders. She graciously accepted the award in honor of all of the award recipients.
To wrap up the National Volunteer Week celebration, a large crowd of volunteers were recognized at the Board of Commission meeting held Tuesday, April 24. In 2017 nearly 124,000 volunteers served an estimated 1.7 million hours for county government and partner groups. Chairman Nash and Volunteer Gwinnett Coordinator, Muriam Nafees and thanked them for their dedicated service and encouraged them to continue to volunteer.
