Choosing the Right Window Covering

My job is to help you make an informed decision in choosing window coverings for your home or place of business. If I explain the value in each product and how it will benefit you, then I have provided you with the tools to make the right choice.

Here’s some basic information that you might find helpful if you’re looking for blinds, shutters, or shades.

All brands are not equal in quality. It is a safe assumption that if it is really inexpensive, then it probably won’t last very long.  Remember the familiar cliché, “You get what you pay for?”

Typically, the faux wood blinds available through the big box stores which are imported are not made to withstand harsh UV rays. The slats will eventually yellow, get brittle, and may even break. The cords that lift the blinds do not operate smoothly and often get tangled. Parts are not available to repair these blinds.  A better option, if you want that type of blind is either a name-brand blind or a generic faux wood blind offered by any window covering dealer. You’ll pay a little more up front, but you will get many more years of use and better performance.

In comparing a generic to a name brand blind, you will again find differences. The quality of the components and materials varies from one manufacturer to another. Generic can also mean private label – a smaller manufacturer. You may pay less for the generic than for the name brand, such as Bali/Graber, Levelor, or Hunter Douglas, but you will notice a difference in the quality of the materials used and the raising and lowering functions of the window covering. The name brand companies have developed superior lift systems to enable their products to operate longer and more trouble-free.

When you’re comparing shades or shutters, the same applies. There are many options for fabrics and materials, some very low-cost, some at the higher end of the price scale. If you’re unsure which way to turn, give us a call. We will gladly walk you through the process of selecting the right window covering for your needs.
