Window covering safety

Window covering cords has been a controversial subject plaguing the window covering industry for many years. Due to the unfortunate deaths of several young children, manufacturers have been charged with implementing better and safer ways to operate blinds and shades.

The Window Covering Safety Council states: “Dangling or accessible cords on window coverings can pose an accidental strangulation hazard to infants and young children. For safety’s sake, replace older corded window coverings with today’s safer products. The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and government safety officials recommend that you only use cordless window products in homes with young children.”

Two of the most popular options are motorized and cordless operation. Both allow a visually clean window covering with no visible cords. Motorization has become a popular convenience, especially given the ability to integrate with home technology. The technology now available with window coverings is far superior to what it was even 2 years ago. Control from your smartphone or tablet allows for operating your blinds or shades anytime from anywhere or you can set schedules and make opening and closing your window coverings an automatic event at your specified times.

Cordless lift is another safe and easy way to lift blinds and shades. Just a word of caution if you’re considering this option, make sure you can reach the top of the window for full lifting and lowering capability. There are other safe, corded choices that will do the job nicely if motorization or cordless won’t work for you.

“If you can’t replace your corded window coverings, you can order free retrofit kits from Window Covering Safety Council at www.windowcoverings.org. The website also contains a wealth of useful safety information for parents and caregivers.” For more product or safety information, give Joan a call for a complimentary consultation: 404 918-5288 or visit www.theblindladies.com
