Gwinnett’s different kinds of families

Who could be more photogenic then a group of Brookwood High School Football Dads in suit coats and shorts with ill-advised shoes?  It is a rhetorical question and the obvious answer is “Wow!”

Abbey Gbur of Grayson brought what looked like a stuffed replica of a Star Wars Ewok to her Senior sitting.  However, it turned out that the little guy is Miles, a four month old Keeshond puppy. Miles was born in Indiana as well as Abbey and her parents Bev and Andy,   Miles’ favorite puppy past time is terrorizing the other Gbur Keeshond, six year old Alvin.  Meanwhile Abbey, a Volleyball athlete at Grayson High School is determining where to continue playing Volleyball when she enters college in a year.

I have watched Michael Stepp since his childhood, teen years at Shiloh High School, military career and now in his early thirties, I am happy he has returned again to Gwinnett County, transitioning to life as a civilian.  When Michael returned once again to Grayson, he brought his companion, Rottweiler puppy Zeus.

There is even more local buzz than usual over the “just around the corner” 2016 high school football season. The Central Gwinnett Black Knights have always looked to the castle for inspiration and increasingly to Head Coach Todd Wofford, head Football coach since 2010.  Coach Wofford’s accomplishments continue to grow and he was named Coach of the year by Atlanta football officials in 2015.

Meanwhile at Grayson High School, four time state champion Football coach Jeff Herron has replaced Coach Mickey Conn (now on the coaching staff at Clemson University.)  The Senior football athletes facing a Ram Tough season ahead are shown in the weight room.

Coaches Kyle and Laura Kiefer met as college students in Colorado when they both worked for a program called Athletes in Action. Years later, their athletic skills and dedication have been a blessing to many Gwinnett County Schools.  Laura was head Volleyball Coach at Brookwood High School but now with daughters Evelyn, Holly Ann and Lucille in tow, she will be coaching at Lanier Christian Academy.  Kyle, who I first met when he was coaching at Grayson High School, is at Mountain View High School where he is one of the football coaches.

Matt Champitto struck me as a gifted Coach when I met him during his time as head baseball Coach at Shiloh High School (Class of 1993 graduate). His dedication to the sport of baseball has lead him to many prestigious appointments: President of the Georgia Dugout Club, Associate Scout for the Texas Rangers, then the St. Louis Cardinals involvement with the USA Baseball 17U and 18U Programs which won Gold Medals in 2009 and 2011 at the Pan Am Games.  Coach Champitto is beginning service as Athletic Director at North Gwinnett High School and is shown at his first Media Day with wife Kristina, who he met during their College Days at University of West Georgia, and their children Davis and Taylor.

Coach Champitto began a commitment to healthy eating 9 years ago and I have been at more than one reception where his very name causes coworkers to drop their cupcakes.
