This is the first year Jail Dogs is participating in the SFM. In the past the Gwinnett Animal Shelter has participated and last year Diva’s Pit Bull Rescue, a Snellville-based rescue group, participated. Diva’s will be back this year and will participate twice a month. Operation Second Chance, or Jail Dogs, started in February 2010 as a partnership between Sheriff Butch Conway and the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department and the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia, according to the organization’s website, www.jaildogs.org. Society of Humane Friends of Georgia provides all financial support for the organization, selects the dogs, handles the application and screening process for potential adopters and supports the volunteer efforts by the trainers and others.
“We are so excited that the Jail Dogs program will be participating in the Snellville Farmers’ Market,” said Gretchen Schulz, market organizer. “They plan to come to eight markets, bringing dogs that have been rescued from the animal shelter, trained by an inmate and are eligible for adoption.
