Uncertain where their next meal will come from, hundreds of local households can only hope they will find food, let alone a Thanksgiving feast. For this reason, StreetWise Georgia will host its Thanksgiving Gathering at Archer High School on Saturday, Nov. 19. Over 300 families have registered to attend the event and receive a holiday meal box.
“Many of us have so much to be grateful for at this time of year, and that’s why we can’t forget about those who are unable to enjoy those same things,” said Director of Operations Joseph O’Reilly. “Many of the families who come to us have had a really hard year. We want this to be one thing that makes them smile, one thing they can be thankful for.”
Beginning at 11 a.m., children will enjoy Thanksgiving-themed games and crafts before the start of a brief, inspirational program. Before exiting, families will collect a box of food, generously filled with frozen turkey, boxed stuffing, cranberry sauce and other festive fixings for a feast at home.
StreetWise Georgia is a nonprofit ministry and charity dedicated to serving families in low-income communities. Established in 1988 by Terry and Pat Powell, the organization’s impact stretches throughout metro Atlanta and has aided thousands of households living below the poverty line. From food pantries to clothing closets to holiday assistance and more, StreetWise seeks to provide for clients’ needs in an eclectic variety of ways.
“It is always a blessing to share our blessings with others,” said President and Co-Founder Terry Powell. “Events like the Thanksgiving Gathering help local individuals, businesses and churches to link arms. Together, we can make it a mission to show care and compassion for those who truly need it.”
