The truth about flatter abs

I have been writing this column for over two years now and I have come to the realization that the topics that I want to cover are endless. There are just too many to choose from. The solution to this, I have decided, is to incorporate a Q&A into my column. I would like to know what is on your mind and what you would like to know more about that will help you achieve your fitness goals.

Kelly Farris, ACSM CPT

Please send me your fitness questions and I will answer them in my monthly column.

To get this first one rolling, I will address the question I believe I am asked more often than any other. This would be “How do I get flat abdominals?”

Truth time. Genetics & body type have everything to do with it. Genetics determine your body type and then in turn your body type predisposes you to carry weight in specific areas.

These are common body types:

Triangle/Apple/Endomorph – high fat to lean tissue ratio, tend toward a rounded appearance, i.e. average humans

V-shaped/Mesomorphs – high ratio of muscle tissue, can achieve a well-defined muscular appearance with minimal effort in comparison to an endomorph, i.e. athletes

Rectangles/Ectomorphs – lower body mass indexes than endomorphs and mesomorphs, slender with low body fat, i.e. fashion models

If you are not an ectomorph, do not despair. The endomorph and mesomorph body, at it’s ideal body weight, can have a chance of success at flatter abs. Flatter, but not necessarily a “six-pack”. The elusive “six-pack abs” are hardly attainable in most body types.

Ideal body weight has the biggest impact. You achieve your ideal body weight through proper diet and exercise. But even then, your abs might not look the way you envisioned.

I suggest this goal. Try for the best you can be with the body type your are born with. Be healthy. Be happy. Don’t put excess pressure on yourself to look a certain way that has no base in reality.

More truth. One of the less popular truths, that I repeatedly share with my clients and members. Flatter abs are made in the kitchen.
