The ability to understand what is read is one of the most important skills for a student to have to be successful in school. Since so much of what students learn is done so through reading textbooks, outside reading, notes, or written work, it is essential for them to perfect this skill!
As an educator and educational consultant, it has become clear that the reason many students do not earn high grades or reach their full academic potential is due to less than ideal study skills. Not all students innately know how to approach their school work in the most effective and efficient ways. Students often tell me they know what to do, but just aren’t doing it.

Woohoo! School is almost out for the summer so we can all take a break and sleep in late, splash around the pool, eat popsicles, and go to the movies! Learning can stop now! Right? Wrong!
Math is a subject that must be studied differently than other courses. Two characteristics separate it from other subjects. It is sequentially learned and it is a skill subject. For a student to have success in math, he/she must understand these two differences and then be willing to change the approach to math study.
I read something recently which stated that the way each of us sees our life shapes our life. And, how we define our life determines our destiny. I believe this principle can be applied to students, as well.

It is important for a child’s success academically that his/her parents insist that academics come before any other extracurricular activities. It is a student’s job to be in school.
We have all heard about the 3 “R”s in academics of reading, writing, and arithmetic, but in reality, there is a fourth “R”, which is responsibility.
